What Human Foods Can Dogs Eat?

A safe list, a caution list and the foods to keep away from dogs.

Many human foods are safe for dogs in small amounts, and some are dangerous. Check each food against an answer page before you share it.

Safe in small amounts

Plain cooked lean meat with no seasoning, plain cooked rice, plain oats, and fruits such as apple slices without seeds or core, blueberries and banana. Treats should stay a small share of the day's food.

Only with care

Avocado flesh in tiny amounts at most, with the pit, skin and leaves removed, because it is high in fat. Fruit with pits, seeds or rinds, such as watermelon and peaches, needs preparing first. Foods that are high in fat or salt, such as bacon, can upset the stomach or cause pancreatitis, so keep them rare.

Keep away

Grapes and raisins, onions, garlic, chocolate, xylitol (a sweetener in some gum and peanut butter), and alcohol. If a dog has eaten any of these, call your vet or an animal poison hotline straight away.
