Can Dogs Eat Avocado? What Is Safe and What Is Not

A little ripe flesh is unlikely to harm most dogs. The pit, skin and leaves are the risk, and avocado is high in fat.

Only with care Dogs

Safe amount

Best kept rare. If you give any, a small piece of plain ripe flesh, now and then. Many vets suggest skipping it.

How to prepare it

Flesh only. Remove the pit (seed), the skin and any leaves. Do not share guacamole, which often contains onion and garlic.

Risks

The pit is a choking and blockage risk. The skin, pit and leaves contain persin; the ASPCA says avocado is mainly a problem for birds, rabbits, horses and livestock, and dogs are more tolerant, but it can still upset a dog's stomach. Avocado is also high in fat, which can cause stomach upset and, in some dogs, pancreatitis. Call your vet if your dog ate the pit, skin or leaves, or a lot of flesh.
